NAPA, CA -- On Tuesday, October 21, 2003, the Florida Legislature took final measures to ensure that the life of a disabled Florida woman, Terri Schiavo, was spared. The Legislature was forced to step in on behalf of Terri when the Florida Court refused to recognize that even the disabled have a constitutionally protected right to life.
“Coming from the State of California, where just a few years ago our Legislature passed Assembly Bill 891, creating the legal mechanism for those in Terri’s position to die, it is without question very encouraging to see another State Legislature that has regard for the lives of the disabled,” stated Dana Cody, attorney and Executive Director of the Life Legal Defense Foundation.
Life Legal Defense Foundation is the nonprofit organization that has helped fund the work of attorney Pat Anderson, who represents the Schindlers, Terri Schiavo’s parents. Life Legal, along with the Arizona-based nonprofit organization, Alliance Defense Fund, funded the efforts of Ms. Anderson -- efforts that literally kept Terri alive.
Parents, the disabled, and those with chronic health problems can sleep a little easier tonight thanks to the courageous efforts of the Schindlers and Pat Anderson.
And everyone can sleep easier knowing that there are still public officials around willing to do the right thing.
Life Legal Defense Foundation was established in 1989, and is a non-profit organization composed of attorneys and other concerned citizens, committed to giving helpless and innocent human beings of any age, particularly the unborn, and their advocates, a trained and committed voice in the courtrooms of our nation.
